Iced cider and lager on tap

42 Technology has designed a novel cellar-based cooling system that dispenses iced lager or cider on tap at around  -2°C with a refreshing head of ice crystals frozen from the original drink.

This breakthrough – developed for a major brewer – generates tiny frozen ice crystals before pumping the mixture along the pipe network to the tap. The system is designed to maintain the iced drink at perfect sub-zero temperatures within the delivery pipes allowing it to easily cope with all levels of demand.

Competitive approaches rely on refrigeration units that take up valuable bar space or use water-based ice cubes that dilute the drink as it is consumed.

Our work included:

  • Generating system concepts, then building proof of principle systems for initial lab and pub trials.
  • Helping secure patents on critical components.
  • Working with the client’s manufacturing partner to ready the design for manufacture.
We have also now further developed the technology to use just one single moving part. This important advance is enabling the core approach to be used in low cost consumer products such as portable cryotherapy machines for medical treatment and iced drink dispensers for home use.
