Low cost unit speeds patient recovery times

42 Technology has developed a low cost, fully automated portable ice generator concept to help make cryotherapy a routine treatment after sports injuries and orthopaedic surgery.

Ice therapy or cryotherapy – compressing and icing an injured area for 20 minute periods – is one of the most effective ways to reduce pain, swelling and accelerate the healing process. The treatment is ideal for anyone recovering from hip or knee surgery or for wound care but is rarely prescribed except for professional sports people. Current units are just too cumbersome, expensive and labour intensive.

42 Technology has developed a high performance, self-contained unit concept that is:

  • fully portable – for use in hospital or at home
  • easy-to-use – requiring virtually no training and minimal operator intervention during treatment
  • low cost and efficient – using novel refrigeration technology to create pumpable ice crystals on demand. The system cycles between icing and warming, even while the patient sleeps

The new small footprint unit is one of several product concepts using an ice generation process initially developed by 42 Technology for use in the brewing industry.
