Heat Exchangers

42 Technology has successfully applied an excellent balance of theoretical understanding, pragmatic engineering and practical experimentation to a number of heat exchanger developments. These have been diverse and have involved both heating and cooling and often a change of phase.

In one challenge a client asked us to reduce the time taken to chill a sealed package of liquid without contaminating the outside of the pack. 42 Technology began by analysing the problem, identifying and quantifying the limitations on heat flux. This understanding and some simple experimentation led to the development of a chilling system with a radically different mechanism. The new mechanism was used to develop a prototype system which cooled the product 150% faster than the original approach.

Another challenge related to improving the design of a consumer product to heat water by extracting heat from hot gasses. Again 42 Technology began with a theoretical analysis of the problem which led to the identification of key design parameters. These parameters were used to steer the design and development of a significantly lower cost heat exchanger, as well as indicating patentable innovations.
