42 Technology seals the deal with Huhtamaki
It's ten to nine in the morning, you frantically thrust a slice of bread into the toaster, grab the margarine from the fridge… and the lid comes off in your hand, falling face down on the dirty lino. Sound familiar? This could soon be a distant memory as a winning partnership between
42 Technology and Huhtamaki, the UK leader in the manufacture of thermo formed tubs, have come up with the perfect solution.
Extensive research into safety and hygiene issues, ease of use and the effect on the environment of this disposable product led Huhtamaki to the solution – a one piece, hinged, low-cost, tamper evident, re-sealable lid for a range of thermo formed tubs. That was the easy part – the next stage would be to find a product development company with the industry experienced engineers, skills and facilities to design such a product.
42 Technology's technical know-how combined well with Huhtamaki's vision of the ideal product, and this strong partnership quickly produced results. Prototype tools were manufactured and moulding produced in order to test the product and gain feedback from trials before the final product was completed.
The final neat, simple and elegant design solution belies the effort and skill needed in the development of such a novel product. The low-cost one-piece moulding comprises a frame which securely attaches the lid to the tub. The lid is hinged over and a tamper evident tab engages it. In use, the lid readily opens, remaining hinged and attached to the tub. It can be resealed by an ingenious interaction with the tamper evident tab.
The design was shown to selected customers at a recent international exhibition. "This
refreshing design solution to an industry need generated significant interest and
excitement," commented Huhtamaki’s Neil Marshall, "It has been a pleasure to work with Nick Campling and his team at 42 Technology Ltd on this project."
Since 1998 42 Technology has established a strong track record for completing innovative product developments in the healthcare, industrial and consumer products and packaging industries. Whilst the initial focus centred around clever mechanical systems, the company's industry-experienced engineers now embrace a wider range of technologies including physics, sensors, electrical and electronic systems and industrial design.
42's business model enables it to offer a particularly cost efficient service. Overheads are minimised by working with clients either in its own laboratories or on site. It also calls on a wide range of associates, experts and specialist partners from around the UK which both expands its scope and reduces fixed costs. |
