Music to your Ears...
42 Technology Limited, the Peterborough-based product development company, is now taking one of its innovative designs for the music industry into commercial production. The capo tasto, commonly called a ‘capo’, is a small attachment which changes the pitch of guitar strings by clamping around its neck. It often needs two hands to adjust or remove, and can adversely affect the tuning of the strings if undue pressure is applied.
The inspiration for the development came from 42 Technology’s Managing Director, Nick Campling, himself an accomplished guitarist. “I have often found the traditional capo awkward to use, so decided to use our engineering and design expertise to develop a better product,” he says. The result is a capo which can be removed or adjusted easily with one hand, applying the minimum amount of pressure on the strings so that the tuning is not affected.”
The company has undertaken an extensive programme of introduction of its newly designed capo to the European music industry, and so great has been the acclaim, that it has taken the decision to spin out a new company, G7th Limited, to sell the product. This is a big step, and the first of its kind for 42 Technology.
G7th is now in the process of finalising funding arrangements to facilitate volume manufacture in The Netherlands, and 42 Technology’s improved capo will be on sale in musical instrument outlets throughout the world in the near future.
“This was not just a personal campaign,” says Campling. “There are over 1.7m guitars sold each year in the USA and UK alone, and most guitarists will have a capo. This is a major business opportunity.”
Since 1998 42 Technology has established a strong track record for successful innovative product developments in the healthcare, industrial and consumer products and packaging industries. Whilst the initial focus centred
around clever mechanical systems, the company’s industry-experienced engineers and product designers now embrace a wider range of technologies including physics, sensors, electrical and electronic systems,
42’s business model enables it to offer a particularly cost efficient service. Overheads are minimised by working with clients either in its own laboratories or on site. It also calls on a wide range of associates, experts and specialist partners from around the UK, which both expands its scope and reduces fixed costs.
