42 Technology makes the big screen

42 Technology makes the big screen

Product design and development consultancy 42 Technology (42T) has taken a lead role in the design of ITrans Modular: a revolutionary building block system, recently been launched by Screen Technology, that allows the construction of large-format screens of virtually any shape or size using the company’s innovative ITrans display technology. One of the first examples is a 200-inch ‘super screen’, video wall comprising 24 modules tiled together.

42T’s design team was brought in by Screen Technology to help solve a critical engineering challenge in the development of its modular system. ITrans Modular is a seamless, high-resolution, scalable approach for signage, advertising and other display applications. The self-contained modules needed to be easily and quickly ‘bolted’ together, but with minimal gaps in between and had to maintain precise alignment relative to one another while withstanding wide temperature changes.

Drawing on their existing experience in industrial heating and cooling projects, 42T’s engineers developed a solution based on a light but sturdy metal frame that can maintain the integrity of the display surface as units expand or contract. Each steel framed building block houses the four, 17-inch diagonal ITrans tiles required per module, plus the associated display and illumination electronics. The building blocks are portable, yet strong enough to support the weight of multiple units stacked on top for even the largest of installations. Service access has also been incorporated to allow easy adjustment or for replacement of parts in situ. Rubber engineering mounts allow the tiles on the display face, which are each made up of 31,000 polymeric light guides, to expand by several millimetres relative to the casing.

“I have found 42 Technology’s team and approach to be excellent. They have added real value to the process with their professionalism, knowledge and commitment. The end result is an outstanding, world-class product which will have a big impact on the digital displays and signage market making the most of our breakthrough ITrans technology,” said Tom Jarman, CEO at Screen Technology.
